Aberdeen Proving Ground is a “closed” outpost, and everyone entering the facility must have proper identification. Vehicles entering the Aberdeen test site are subject to 100% control, and all visitors without an appropriate vehicle identification or military identification card will be denied access. First-time visitors must report to the Visitor Control Center located at gate 715, located at the entrance to Route 40. A military identification card or military sponsorship is required, as well as a valid driver's license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance when logging in.
The Green Bank Observatory has a university residence where astronomers can stay while they observe or reduce the data once their observations are finished. Rooms are available for single, double or triple use, and students pursuing higher or university studies and coming to Green Bank to use the telescope pay a discounted rate. In addition, there are four one-bedroom apartments with equipped kitchens that the astronomer can occupy. Cribs, high chairs and roll-away beds are also available.
The Observatory also maintains some furnished 2- to 4-bedroom homes on the observatory property, which are available from time to time for astronomers who wish to come to Green Bank with their families for extended periods. The rooms in the university residence hall will be arranged before arrival and will be provided with the appropriate towels, washcloths, soap, etc. For residents staying a week or more, the rooms will be cleaned and the sheets will be changed once a week. If the level of hospital admissions for COVID-19 in Alexandria is high, all people must wear high-quality masks in the NSF building. Visitors to Smithsonian museums should expect “airport-like security screening” upon arrival. At the Udvar-Hazy Center there is a baggage check upon entry.
At many of our museums, one of our security staff members will greet you upon entry and will thoroughly check all suitcases, briefcases, purses and containers. We recommend that you limit the amount of personal items and bags you bring to our facilities to get through security checkpoints faster.
